San Simeon

I’d seen magical photos before of zebras grazing on grass near the ocean but tossed off the notion that they were real. The idea seemed almost preposterous, maybe a little mythical. But with a little research I discovered that this fantastical dream world does exist in San Simeon, California.

I instantly felt the strongest desire to go and see these zebras for myself, I felt such a pull to witness this mystical landscape where both zebra and cow calves live harmoniously adjacent to the Pacific. Within the week of research, I recruited my friend M to join me on a film adventure up North.

Our entire road trip was full of laughter, deep conversations, and so much magic. That day we were explorers on a mission to find something that did not seem quite real.

Hopping from the roadside into the hilly landscape was like stepping into an alternate dimension. I could still spot my car parked off in a dirt patch, but turning forward all I could see were rolling fields of tall grass and wild creatures. The view was unbelievable and M and I felt so overcome by the beauty of the zebras, cattle, mountains, and our magnificent view of the great Pacific sea.

To be so close to wild animals in their home is such a sacred experience. That land is theirs. We share this planet and that is a privilege ((and should be treated as such)). The universe is enormous...it’s depths unfathomable to the human mind. We are so very small. Looking a zebra in the eye...we realized that we are no greater than animals. Our role as human beings is to make sure animals continue to have what they need to thrive.

Remember, we only need the same ((though we are conditioned to want more)): sunlight, air, soil, plants, water, fire.

Live minimally.

Tread Lightly.
