Hidden Talent (002): MÄRCT NYC

From a young age, art + music were major parts of my life. My childhood was full of piano practices and painting lessons. Having parents who exposed me to all sorts of art shaped me into a person who appreciated talent and I started to look for it in hidden places. From unknown painters to budding musicians I decided to establish a series featuring the creators who I know and love and want you to love too!! Wanna help? Read about these amazing people, scope their work, and share their interviews with the artists in your life!!

Today I have the privilege of sharing an interview with Marcus, the creator of MÄRCT NYC, a jewelry company specializing in melding utilitarian design in a stylish, wearable medium. If you’ve dreamt of launching your own business or want to learn more about an up-and-coming brand read on!!

When did you establish MÄRCT NYC?
MÄRCT was established (officially) in November of 2016 in NYC!

When did you first become interested in design? Are there other jewelers who influence or inspire your work?
I knew very early on that I wanted to design - not just clothes but all things. I went to Columbia College Chicago for fashion design,  fell into wardrobe styling, and loved it.  I started designing accessories almost by accident! I wanted something very specific, no-one was making it - so i made it myself. And MÄRCT NYC was born. I’m inspired by all creators - not just jewelers. I find influence in all things - mostly real-life events.

Describe your personal style in 3 words:
Street-Classic-Chic

If you could collaborate with any designer who would you love to work with?
OMG! I’m completely obsessed with JPG (Jean Paul Gaultier). He’s a creative genius!! I would Love Love Love to work with him..on anything!

What has been the most challenging or unexpected aspect of launching your own business?
Trying to do everything myself! The business side was by far the most challenging aspect. As a creative person, I only want to focus on the creative aspect of the business - but I quickly learned that actually running the business is just as important - if not more. It’s 80% Business & 20% creative. I had to get a team behind me.

What is the meaning behind your Break “Encase” Emergency pendants? What are you aiming to promote?
Break “ENCASE” Emergency - is simply a play on words; The razor is ENCASED in lucite.  The Pendant itself has no real meaning, per say. It can mean whatever you want it to mean.

Is there a particular idea you’re trying to promote or raise awareness of (razor blades have all sorts of different connotations)?
MÄRCT is not promoting or trying to raise awareness of anything.  We are a streetwear brand, making clothes and accessories for other streetwear enthusiasts. When some people see a razor blade and automatically think of self-harm and/or violence. Others think of protection.  Different upbringings cause for different views/opinions. It’s really just a cool ass necklace. That's it. That's all. People try to dig up a meaning behind everything - even when there isn’t one.

What’s next for MÄRCT designs? Can we expect to see new collections anytime soon?
The Gold Break “ENCASE” Emergency pendant necklace was just released. Expect to see the full MÄRCT line launching this summer.
