Whether you are planning a girls-night-in or just want to spend a rainy day inside eating chocolates and drinking tea good movies are a must. Sometimes it’s easy to forget your old favorites and other times you’re wishing for something new to watch. I’ve compiled a list that covers a good mix of both. Have a look through, pick a flick (or 4), and get ready to make some popcorn because these are my top 10 movie picks for a cozy day. Like Crazy My favorite movie of all time, Like Crazy centers around the lives of Anna and Jacob, two soul mates dealing with the classic long distance relationship. Not-so-classic is the incredible authenticity of the characters and the powerful connection you feel to them as the viewer. No need to say more, go watch it, a must see!! Almost Famous Almost Famous will have you wishing you grew up in the 70s almost instantly. 16 year-old William Miller gets the opportunity of a lifetime to go on tour with the band Stillwater and along the way he finds and loses his voice as he becomes entangled in the world of Rock and Roll, experiences romance, and discovers his passion. Moonrise Kingdom Who doesn’t love Wes Anderson? Choosing just one of his films to recommend was impossible, and unless you want to do an Anderson marathon in chronological order starting with Bottle Rocket, Moonrise Kingdom is definitely a wonderful starting point. Like most of his work, Moonrise Kingdom is very light-hearted, quirky, and of course the cinematography is immaculate. Many of Anderson’s typical cast members appear such as Bill Murray, but the lead roles of Suzy and Sam went to fresh talent. If you haven’t already seen it, today is your day!! ((Warning: if you watch this movie you will definitely be stuck on Anderson all day...check out Rushmore or The Grand Budapest Hotel next.)) Ferris Bueller's Day Off If you’re trying to come up with a classic movie to watch you can never go wrong with Ferris Bueller. ((Fun Fact: for my 15th birthday we set up a projector in the backyard and all my girlfriends and I sat around on couches outside by the pool at night, cuddled up in blankets eating candy and popcorn watching this film!!)) Splash If you’re anything like me you’ve got a thing for mermaid, romance, and New York and I don’t know of any other movie besides Splash that combines all 3. Give it a watch. The Virgin Suicides Sofia Coppola directed The Virgin Suicides and collaborated with Corinne Day on a special book of photos from the film ((I know two super cool women collabing YES to that!!)). The film is all about the Libson sisters and a tragic suicide. The film tackles heavy topics and evidently has a sort of loss-of-innocence//coming of age vibe but defiant characters like Lux ((played by Kirsten Dunst)) counteract the negativity and make the film rather enjoyable. Not ideal for a fun champagne and pizza kind of get together, but if you’re looking for something a bit more serious and thought provoking this film is a gem. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind One of the most fascinating movies of all time. If you like movies that you need to focus through this is for you. Starring Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, and Mark Ruffalo this film tells the story of a relationship between Joe Barish and Clementine faltered by a sort of dystopian clinic you can go to and erase all of your memories of a person...trippy I know. The cinematography at points is stunning and the development of the characters over the course of the film is exceptional. ((Viewing Tip: See if you can correlate the colors of Clementine’s hair with the seasons...it might help you grasp the non-linear timeline.)) Waking Life This film is animated, but don’t be fooled, it’s not for kids. The movie was created using a technique called rotoscoping where everything was filmed on analog cameras and artists were commissioned to paint over the stills which gives the movie an almost stop-motion and highly surreal feel. If that isn’t reason enough to check it out, the film takes you on a deep and all encompassing philosophical journey that will have you feeling existential and introspective for weeks. We Bought a Zoo By far the cutest movie on the list. We Bought a Zoo is appropriate for all ages and will always be one of my favorites to watch with my family. Based on a true story, the movie chronicles the adventure of the Mee family when Benjamin Mee ((played by Matt Damon)) purchases a zoo for him and his kids to move to and restore with the help of a colorful and eccentric staff. This is a feel-good movie that offers something for any aged viewer. Grab your cat(s) or dog(s) ((or your favorite stuffed animal)), some animal crackers, and pretend you have your very own zoo while watching this today!! When Harry Met Sally
My Nanny was the one who initially turned me onto movies starring Meg Ryan and I’ve been enamored by her ever since. She is in SO many great films ((Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail...)) but I think When Harry Met Sally might be my favorite of the lot. This movie is perfect for any occasion - fun to watch alone, with a date, or with your friends...nothing is stopping you - go give it a watch!! |
